It may operate as an alternate airport serving civil aviation
SAN ISIDRO, Santo Domingo Este.- The general director of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation, Héctor Porcella, stated that the renovation and modernization of the old runway of the San Isidro military airport, of the Air Force of the Dominican Republic (FARD), will allow its eventual use as an alternate terminal in emergency situations, for the benefit of the country’s aeronautical system.
He revealed that the idea has the full support of President Luis Abinader, when consulted by him and the general commander of the FARD, Major General Carlos Febrillet Rodríguez.

He indicated that the project includes the installation of a new control tower and its corresponding prefabricated cabin, the civil works of the Air Operations Surveillance Control Center and the enabling of a Radio Aid to Air Navigation system.
Porcella defined as an initiative of high strategic interest the project to modernize the Air Navigation Aid Systems of the San Isidro Air Base, located in one of the areas with the greatest aeronautical activity in the national territory.
After congratulating Commander General Febrillet Rodríguez for the important initiative, Porcella stated that it is a project of great importance, due to its contribution to the modernization of general aviation and the strengthening of operational safety, which involves the IDAC and all institutions that make up the country’s aeronautical industry.
He indicated that IDAC is assuming the responsibility of supporting the development of the new project in the installation phase and in monitoring all technical aspects to ensure that comply with ICAO regulations and regulations governing international aviation.
The ceremony to begin work on the San Isidro runway took place immediately after the impressive graduation ceremony of the twenty-second class “Major General Fernando Cruz Méndez”, 2020-2023, in which 25 cadets received the title that accredited them as pilots and graduates in aeronautical sciences, with the rank of second lieutenant.
The activities were attended by the administrative minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, the minister of defense, lieutenant general Carlos Luciano Díaz Morfa and the titular officers of the main military institutions and the National Police.
