Santo Domingo. The Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation Idac, the National Geographic Institute (IGN) and the Military Cartographic Institute (ICM) will join forces in order to develop a modern and updated cartography for use in visual air navigation throughout the national territory.
The information was released by the general director of Idac, Héctor Porcella, during a meeting with the institutions that have to do with the authorization and certification of buildings and antennas or surveys of information on geographical points, which are essential data to update the visual maps used in the country’s aviation.
Porcella announced that, for the first time the Dominican Republic will have an updated digital platform to respond to the need for flights that are governed by the Visual Flight Rules (VFR).
Bolívar Troncoso, Director of the IGN “José Hungría Morel”, affirmed that this entity is fulfilling the mandate of the law that orders to develop a modern and updated cartography base of the country to georeference and locate in its cartographic coordinates the data of latitude and longitude in the Dominican geographical space.
“The project proposed by the director of Idac is part of what we have to do in order to georeference all the antennas, buildings that exist in the country, which can be subject to obstacle or accident in national air navigation,” said the renowned academic.
Pilot Colonel Melvy Paulino Fard, Deputy Director of the Military Cartographic Institute, representing the head, Brigadier General Rafael Antonio Carrasco Paulino, Dominican Republic Army, reported that this entity under the Ministry of Defense is working on the certification of VFR aeronautical charts, hoping to have the updated cartography within a reasonable time.
The meeting took place at Idac´s conference room with the participation of Claudia Roa, Director of Air Navigation; Pedro Pila de los Santos, Director of Flight Standards; Gender Castro, Director of Operational Surveillance; Raul Muñoz, Director of Information and Communication Technology; Luis José Chávez, Director of Communication and Public Relations; and Jasmín Fabre, in charge of Interinstitutional Agreements.
