Punta Cana. – The Director General of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC), Igor Rodríguez Durán, officially presented the certification this Friday to the executives of the new Punta Cana Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) Center, a state-of-the-art facility developed by Grupo Puntacana in partnership with FL Technics.

During the ceremony, Rodríguez Durán highlighted that this certification represents a significant milestone for the development of the national aviation industry, strengthening the country’s technical capabilities and further establishing the Dominican Republic as a strategic destination for specialized aviation services in the region.

Strategically located within the Punta Cana Free Trade Zone (PCFTZ), the new MRO facility is the first heavy aircraft maintenance center of its scale in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean. The initiative is part of a joint effort aimed at enhancing the sector’s competitiveness while attracting new investment opportunities and creating jobs.

Among its key features, the complex includes a main steel-structure hangar unique in its category, covering more than 13,336 square meters within a total site area exceeding 71,000 square meters, with a height of nearly 23 meters.

In this initial phase, the facility has five maintenance bays capable of accommodating simultaneous work on narrow-body aircraft, with plans for future expansion to a total of 12 maintenance positions.

The center has been certified by IDAC to provide advanced comprehensive maintenance services for Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 family aircraft. It also possesses the technical capabilities to service wide-body aircraft, including the Airbus A330A340, and the Boeing 747 and 777.

This new maintenance organization is expected to generate a significant economic impact for the country through the creation of specialized jobs and the strengthening of the national aviation ecosystem. As part of its development plan, it includes active recruitment and technical training programs, offering opportunities for entry-level aircraft mechanics.

With this certification, IDAC reaffirms its commitment to enhancing operational safety, modernizing the national aviation system, and positioning the Dominican Republic as a leading logistics and aviation hub in the Americas.
