Las Americas Airport, – The director of the Dominican Institute of Commercial Aviation, Idac, Héctor Porchella, announced the construction of a new Control Tower at Las Americas International Airport, José Francisco Peña Gómez, as well as the installation of a state-of-the-art Doppler weather radar at the same airport.

In addition, Porchella announced the implementation of two new weather radars at the Cibao International Airport, located in Santiago, and Gregorio Luperón International Airport in Puerto Plata.

These initiatives seek to strengthen operational safety in arriving and departing flights at these airports, contributing to the modernization of airport infrastructures in the country.

The director of IDAC stressed that the year 2023 marked a milestone for the Dominican Republic by receiving 10 million tourists.

Despite this achievement, Porchella stressed that the country has new challenges for the future ahead, especially in terms of increasing air and tourist traffic by 2024.

“Investment in airports is extremely necessary,” said Porchella, who explained that the construction of the new control tower in Las Américas is contemplated in the new agreement with the company Aerodom, operators of six airports.

Regarding the meteorological radars, it was reported that the Cibao Airport in Santiago will have a new primary and secondary radar, while the Gregorio Luperón International Airport, in Puerto Plata, will receive a state-of-the-art Doppler weather radar.

This equipment will not only improve the operational safety of airports, but will also provide valuable information to the National Meteorological Office, Onamet.

In a telephone interview, Héctor Porcella emphasized the importance of these technological advances, highlighting that the new radar systems will contribute significantly to air navigation and provide updated and reliable information to ONAMET for dissemination to the country.
