Punta Cana, DR. – The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hugo Rivera, highlighted the commitment of the Dominican Republic to the sustainable development of air transport, since civil aviation is not only a vital sector for the economy, but is also part of an ecosystem that includes foreign investment, tourism and Dominican communities abroad.
Rivera, who represented Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez at the Global Civil Aviation Implementation Symposium held in Punta Cana, reiterated the country’s willingness to work in collaboration with Icao to promote safety, security and sustainability of the civil aviation system internationally, while expanding efforts to reduce Co2 emissions in aeronautical operations, and highlighted that in 2023 the country registered the mobilization of 17,530,000 passengers and 132,098 air operations, which places it in second place in terms of air operations in Latin America.
Vice Minister Rivera, in charge of economic affairs and cooperation in the Foreign Ministry, recalled the Santo Domingo Declaration, signed in April 2023 by the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation, Idac, and several agencies specialized in environmental protection, with the objective of advancing towards the sustainable development of clean energies, and ratified the commitment of the Government led by President Luis Abinader to the defense of the environment and the control of carbon emissions.
Rivera, who was accompanied by the general director of the Idac, Héctor Porcella and other authorities, highlighted the growing concern about the effects of climate change in the country, including the erosion of beaches, the increase in temperature and sea level, highlighting that “despite not being a large carbon emitter, the country suffers significant damage to its environment, and in recent years we have seen how our coasts have been affected by sargassum, a species of algae that negatively impacts our ecosystems coastal”.
