Belize.- Promoting greater participation of women in aviation will be one of the central themes of the Twelfth Meeting of Directors of Civil Aviation of North America, Central America and the Caribbean, initiated in Belize under the auspices of the International Civil Aviation Organization, Icao.

The general director of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation, Idac, Héctor Porcella, who heads the Dominican delegation at the event, reported that a multidisciplinary panel will explore how to encourage greater interest among women in the aeronautical area.

The objective of the panel is to identify criteria and policies to ensure that women are competitive and do not face barriers in the hiring process, which also involves identifying structural obstacles that may limit their advancement in aviation.

According to Porcella, the panel responsible for this proposal must conclude with recommendations on the measures that participating countries should adopt to promote more equitable participation of women in the aviation industry.

Highlights the prominence of women in the Idac

Héctor Porcella said that in the last four years the Dominican Republic has taken important steps to elevate the prominence of women in civil aviation, including the appointment, for the first time in the entire history of Idac, of a woman as director of Air Navigation , one of the most responsible technical functions within the institution.

Porcella referred to the architect and air traffic controller Claudia Beatriz Roa Ochoa, who joined Idac in 1996 and has master’s degrees in air transport management and national security, and a diploma in air transport economics.

He indicated that Idac currently has five outstanding women as sector directors, the largest number that this organization has had since its creation, and they are: Bernarda Franco, legal director; Sarah Estévez, director of Planning and Development; Clara Fernández, director of the Academy of Aeronautical Sciences; Ana Ysa Tejeda, director of Human Resources; and Claudia Beatriz Ochoa, director of Air Navigation.
